The LaPorte Slicers boys varsity basketball team completed a thrilling weekend sweep at home, narrowly defeating Sectional 3 rival Mishawaka 59-58 in a nailbiter on Saturday.
Sawyer Tonagel sealed the victory for the Slicers by sinking a game-winning free throw with just 0.7 seconds left on the clock, lifting his team to an 11-4 record on the season.
The Slicers showcased a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double figures. Griffin Ott-Large led the way with 16 points, while Tonagel, Destin Matzke, and Reed Raymond each contributed 10. Nic Spence added 7 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, rounding out a strong team performance.
LaPorte held a narrow edge throughout the game, matching Mishawaka at 12 points in the first quarter before surging to a 35-24 halftime lead. Mishawaka mounted a comeback, but La Porte’s resilience and Tonagel’s late-game composure secured the win.
The Slicers will return to action Friday night with a DAC road matchup at Michigan City, part of a Girls/Boys Varsity Doubleheader. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
