Mike Nutter Named The Journal Gazette’s 2024 Citizen of the Year

Mike Nutter, president of the Fort Wayne TinCaps, has been named The Journal Gazette’s 2024 Citizen of the Year, becoming the first recipient from the sports industry in the award’s history. The honor recognizes Nutter’s dedication to leadership, community service, and enhancing Fort Wayne’s quality of life.

Since joining the TinCaps in 1999 and assuming the role of team president in 2001, Nutter has been instrumental in establishing the organization as a cornerstone of Fort Wayne. Under his leadership, the TinCaps have earned numerous national accolades, including Minor League Baseball’s CommUNITY Champion Award in 2024, recognizing their charitable work. The team also leads Minor League Baseball in fan experience, with Parkview Field remaining the top-rated ballpark by publications like Stadium Journey.

Nutter’s impact extends beyond the ballpark. He actively volunteers with organizations such as Erin’s House for Grieving Children, Visit Fort Wayne, and Baseball Chapel. His contributions have earned him numerous honors, including MiLB Executive of the Year in 2022 and induction into the Northeast Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.

The TinCaps experienced a banner year in 2024, averaging 5,590 fans per game—their highest attendance since 2018—and hosting events like Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby X, a sold-out spectacle featuring former MLB stars. April also marked Parkview Field’s 7 millionth guest since its 2009 opening, with attendance continuing to climb thanks to initiatives like the debut of the Holiday Lights experience.

The TinCaps’ 2025 season kicks off on April 4 at Parkview Field against the Lansing Lugnuts, as Nutter and his team look to build on the success and community engagement that earned him this latest recognition. Tickets are available now at TinCaps.com/Tickets.
