The Warsaw Tigers wrestling team concluded the first day of the prestigious Al Smith Invitational in 20th place, with 12 of 14 wrestlers earning wins and advancement points in one of the state’s most competitive individual tournaments.

Leading the way for the Tigers was heavyweight Kameron Kauffman, who dominated his competition with three first-period pins to advance to the semifinals in the 285-pound division. Kauffman will represent Warsaw in tomorrow’s placement matches.

KC Smith (132 pounds) and Enrique Silva (150 pounds) also had standout performances. Both wrestlers made deep runs into the tournament, falling just one match short of placement.

Smith opened the day with a technical fall victory in the first round before moving into the consolation bracket, where he earned two more wins by decision. He finished with a 3-2 record on the day.

Silva matched Smith’s 3-2 record, fueled by three pinfalls, including one in the opening round and two more in the consolation rounds, showcasing his resilience and determination throughout the tournament.

The Tigers will look to build on their performances in the second and final day of the competition as Kauffman fights for a podium finish.
