The Ball State women’s tennis team won its second-straight match after registering a 5-2 victory over Oakland University Sunday afternoon at the Northwest YMCA.
Alana Bristow’s three-set thriller on court No. 6 was the deciding point for the now 2-1 Cardinals while the Golden Grizzlies fell to 2-3 on the season.
Ball State was able to take the early 1-0 edge over Oakland after winning doubles competitions on courts one and three both by a 6-1 decision. Isabelle Tanjuatco alongside Sarah Shahbaz captured their 6-1 defeat over Emilia Jarvinen and Warisara at the No. 1 slot while Jemima Williams-Phillips paired up with Ella Hazelbaker to clinch the point on court No. 3.
In singles, Shahbaz extended BSU’s lead to 2-0 beating the Golden Grizzlies’ No. 3 player, Edie Hammond in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Oakland was able to take the top two courts from Ball State but fortunately for the Cardinals they prevailed with wins at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 spots to secure the victory.
It was Bristow’s comeback win at No. 6 singles over Josie Ward that helped propel BSU past Oakland as she locked up match point with her 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory.
The Ball State women’s tennis team returns to the Northwest YMCA on Saturday, Feb. 15 against Dayton. First serve is at 1 pm ET.
