Worobel’s Springboard Sweep Leads to Double Weekly Honors

Avery Worobel set a Purdue freshman record on 1-meter as part of her springboard diving sweep at the Big Ten Triple Duals, becoming the first student-athlete in the league this season to simultaneously win Big Ten Diver and Freshman of the Week.

Worobel was victorious with list scores of 334.10 on 1-meter and 354.80 on 3-meter vs. Minnesota and Northwestern in Minneapolis. She now owns Purdue’s freshman records on both springboards, moving into fifth place in program history with her season-best score on 1-meter. She eclipsed the 3-meter record a the Purdue Invitational in November.

Worobel had the top-scoring dive in four of the six round on 1-meter while winning by 16.5 points. She teamed up with Sophie McAfee for a 1-2 finish on 3-meter. Worobel had the top-scoring dive in three of the six rounds and bested the third-place finisher (top non-Boilermaker) by 18.9 points.

For the fourth season in a row, a Boilermaker claimed Big Ten Diver and Freshman of the Week simultaneously. With Daryn Wright and Campbell Scofield winning the women’s Diver and Freshman of the Week honors a week ago, Purdue produced a pair of repeat honorees.

Jordan Rzepka (4), Wright (4) and Worobel teamed up to win nine Big Ten Diver of the Week honors for the Boilermakers this season. That was Purdue’s most since 2019-20 when Greg Duncan (5) and Emily Bretscher (4) also teamed up for nine.

Wright won consecutive Big Ten Diver of the Week honors in October 2023 and swimmers Mallory Jump and Claire Abbasse did likewise for Freshman of the Week honors in October 2019. The Purdue women had not produced a different Big Ten Diver of the Week in consecutive weeks since Casey Matthews and Michelle Cabassol in January 2014.

Rzepka also swept the springboard events at the Big Ten Triple Duals in Minneapolis in 2022 to win Big Ten Diver and Freshman of the Week after the final regular-season meet of his debut season at Purdue.

Worobel and the Purdue women compete Feb. 19-22 at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus. The men’s championship meet is the following week in Minneapolis.
